Is it possible to add the CD changer yourself (I know it can for the Coupe/Conv), and if so, has anyone done it? I had a spare factory 12 disc changer that I installed into my Z06. I can put a C5 sticker on it if I have to.
My unit is in the drivers side compartment, gets pretty darn warm. If i had to do it again, id probably mount it to the wall in the main compartment well. No, do not mess with the head deck.
Remove passenger side sill plate, you will find your plug, plug in your patch cord. Lift the carpet in the rear, drivers side, you will see the cord end. Thats why it made sense to install in drivers side compartment, the end of the cord is right there, but i would re-locate due to the heat.it is 'on' continuosly if you are a dd id be worried about the equiptment over the long haul.heat kills. Try this site, the cable is much less expensive if they still stock them. I installed my changer in the center compartment against the back vertical surface (drivers side of the latching mechanism), just as GM did from the factory on the coupes.part #12344015 for $44.95. Click on 'CD changer' and go from there to the DELCO changers and related parts. This company might also have the complete bracket kit if your changer only came with the side brackets. You can install the changer w/o the complete kit, but it's not as easy.
You need the larger L shaped bracket which GM epoxied to the fiberglass. It has integrated studs which the side brackets mount to. I used heavy duty VELCRO instead of the epoxy and four 1/8' rivets.
It's as solid as a rock and will be easy to remove should I ever decide to do so.Their website doesn't show the part number for the complete installation kit, but it's price is $124.95 which includes the cable. That's a terrific price compared to what I paid directly from GM (now discontinued). For a Z06 I think you will find that you'll need the complete harness that runs from the floor panel back to the changer, they're not pre-wired.As far as location, I mounted mine to the rear of the partition. It's never been a problem, my golf clubs still fit. Sorry, when i say factory pre-wired, i mean they are pre-wired from your head deck. No need to do anything there, already done, simply locate your plug on the passenger side floorboard or under the sill plate, plug your patch cord in, route it to your final install location.
Long story made short. The cable that I need is no longer available through M&R Electronics, GM or GMpartsdirect.com, etc. I tried everybody. GM is no longer making it so therefore nobody has in stock. I talked to a guy at M&R (Mike) and he told me the exact gm part number I needed - which all the other ones mentioned in this post weren't the right ones.
Did a google on the number (12497876) and came up with a few vendors that recognized it - but couldn't get it anymore. One guy was able to search Chevy dealers for me and found the very last cable in the whole freakin' world it seemed in stock at Kerbeck Chevy in Atlantic City, NJ.
Price of the cable assy is $146.16 - but he told me he would give me one hell of a deal being it was the last one around for $73.08 - SOLD!I should have it here by Friday. Some of the most simple things always have to turn into a big cluster! GM part numbers seem to change constantly.
I didn't know about M&R when I ordered mine last year through GM. To bad they haven't updated their website to reflect they're no longer available.I also found a dealer (site vendor) who did the dealership search and located everything I needed.
It cost me a little more, but it's complete. I guess I better order the cable before they stop selling them. I installed my changer a few months back have yet to connect it.Here is a link to just the cable. That looks like the cable that M&R told me about. If so, it's not the right one. That is the cable that goes from the head unit all the way back to the changer.
The one I am referring to connects to the plug that GM left in the passenger side floorboard sill plate and then to the disc changer. Alot easier then doing the whole cable deal. But if that's all that can be purchased. I guess you have no choice.Good Luck.
